Question for 409 timing pros

Ok in my 65 rag with a 340hp with a m20 muncie and a single eddy carb on a stock intake I'm having a pinging issue when I gun it. Motor is completely stock including manifolds and single point distributor and I don't have a timing light but I was always taught even though I know is wrong but have it running, turn up idle to like 2k rpm and turn distributor till it misses go the other way till it misses again then set it in the middle. Running 92 shell gas no additives. My other 09 with dual set up runs without this issue just a little stumble on take off. Maybe it's time I pony the money up for a timing light?

Get a dial back timing light, and a recurve kit for your distributor. You will learn a lot about timing.

That procedure puts you in the ball park but not on the home plate.

Just back off the timing until the ping stops. Don't need a light for that.

Could be something as simple as the vacuum advance not backing off fast enough. Something that should be in everyone's bag when tuning a high performance engine tuned for the street is an adjustable vacuum advance.
