Seems that all the great society entitlement give aways did was breed an entitlement mentality into those targeted to be the recipients. All that war on poverty talk from 50 years plus ago did was create a dependency class of persons who would not have to be responsible for themselves like the rest of the populace. As this continued, the newer generations of entitlement persons would never learn to work and be independent and stand on their own two feet and figure life out. This set the stage for the political scenario we have today. The democrats need to create a permanent underclass of their own making to stay in control. They sacrifice human achievement and independence on the altar of political dominance. The subjects under the left are told to "vote for us again and again (often in the same election) or the Republicans will cut off your welfare, free medical, food stamps, cell phones, bus passes, etc, thereby breeding fear in them to not let things change for the Nation's good. I always admired the small percentage of them that, as children, studied, put out a little effort, did well in school and got ahead. Some of them got scholarships, went to a decent college, got decent jobs, and escaped the politically correct loop of generational entitlements and poverty. The thing that is so sad, as a child grows up and begins to do this, his peers and even his family begin to treat him like an outcast. The result is that the child grows up and never returns to the project as an adult. He or she marries, buys a house, has a family, raises them right and plans for the future, and the result is that the former family practically disowns him or her, but then, as more financial and social success arrives, expects them to"give back". The sad moral of the story is that all success comes at a price. Sometimes, a very high one.
