CARTER 4 BARREL AFB HOT AIR IDLE COMPENSATOR

Looks to me this part if it failed would cause some kind of a mess in an engine. Can you get by with out one in the carb ? Would a phenolic spacer help reduce the heat soak? Thoughts on this would be appreciated.

The spacer is a must. You'll have a vacuum leak if you remove the hot idle compensator.Be sure to plug the exposed port and you'll be fine.

My Carter AFB (1962) has both a phenolic spacer and a steel plate under it to help with heat soak. Not sold on the idea that it works, but the people that designed the carburetor must have thought that it was necessary, and I am smart enough to know that they have more information and life experience with heat soak than I do.
