Yeah but you would never know. If your 64 was built before Nov. 18.......then these would be "your" heads. If your car would have been a Nov 62 date......then these would have been "your" heads also!!!! See how easy this is??????

My heads have the Julian date of 119. I was thinking this meant they are from April 29, 1963. Could they be either 62 or 63 heads as well?

Thank you Phil. I guess at some point some of you already told me this since I had them listed as from 1963......I just couldn't remember it. :think

My 1964 817 heads are dated 134 May 14th, and 115 April 25th. The block is 155 June 4th. All are cast well ahead of the 9/16/63 engine assembly date. The car was built 10A.

Good info Ron, thanks! Does anyone know the last day (week? month?) of 814 block production and the switch to the 422 casting? You think any 422 blocks ended up in late ‘63 cars? I think I have an early production ‘64 400hp engine. 422 block, 122 (May 2) Julian date, 690 heads, one is 119 (April 30) and the other is 40 (February 9). The guy I got this engine from swears he pulled it out of a 63 bel air. I questioned him asking are you sure it wasn’t a 64?? He had no pics, going off 40 year old memories, and he isn’t a numbers geek like I am. Years, codes, dates etc. don’t mean anything to him. Supposedly it was original to that car, and he told me it got T-boned and parted out in the mid 70’s in Pueblo. He bought the engine and everything he needed to put it in the 63 Biscayne that I bought from him. Same guy decked the block too so the numbers are gone:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh

Dug up a little more info. Both same thread.

Also my extra 409 block is a 3844422 T0326 QC I know I pulled from a 63. It has a March 26 stamped date and a CFD and a Julian 73(March 13) for date code. So the Stamp code and the Julian code are different.

It's possible that the 422 block came into production in late 63, but also possible that it was a replacement engine installed in the 63 you took it out of. The only way to tell for sure would be if the VIN derivative on the pad matched the 63's VIN. As for the dates, the julian date is the casting date....the stamped date is the assembly date.

I have a 422 block stamped T0425, 100 Julian date, that I know for absolute certainty came out of a 1963. At the end of the day it personally means nothing to me what year car the motor was originally born with. I learned a long time ago to just let the experts be the experts.

What’s TO425, April 25th? Cast on April 11? Thanks for the info! What’s the vin?

I have another 422 block that I’m pretty darn sure is an early 64. Julian is 163 (June 11), the assembly code is T1001QC (Oct. 1) and the vin is pretty low, F118754. Anyone else?:dunno

Use only with engines subsequent to T1118.

This catalog was printed in 1974 indicating that either 814 and 422 blocks were still being cast for service or there were left over blocks from production still available for service. Since the 656 block was the last production casting made which should be available for service and there is no mention of it in this catalog, it seems likely that these are left over blocks from 63-64.

Notes 8 and 9 above seem to establish the change over date of 11-18-63 for the Z 11 cam use in 64 production solid lifter engines requiring 583 heads with different valve springs.

Does anyone have the Chevrolet Service News issue from June/July 64? It should give more info on the engine changes.

This also seems to indicate that both the 814 and 422 blocks were used simultaneously at least during some production overlap. I recall an article by Curt Harvey in an old magazine article that indicated the 814 and 422 blocks were both used in 63 and 64.
