#3857656 409 questions

I just purchased a 409 motor in the wilds of Valparaiso, Nebraska, with a casting number of 3857656 and I'm confused about the date codes and pad numbers . This web site says this is probably a late 1964, 1965.
The pad number is T0527XG.
The date code appears to be CFD.
It has cuts in the upper cylinders which would mean a truck engine, correct?

The heads are off and the Casting numbers are 3819333 and both have a date code of 100 or maybe 001.
It has a 4 barrel intake.

There is very little ridge in the cylinders but it has a burned exhaust valve; perhaps a resent overhaul with a valve adjusted too tight?

I'm thinking about selling it. Do these truck engines have much value? Most accessories were taken off when removed from service.

Any help is appreciated,
Bob

Yes they do have value. The notches in the truck blocks actually unshroud the exhaust valve. A lot of people are running them. There is one listed in the For Sale forum. God bless him if he gets what he's asking! But then, what do I know? :dunno

Just my 2 cents, but the block would likely be the most desirable part of the lot, assuming it is cleaned and crack checked. Lots of builds start with this component and demand is solid. The heads are worth maybe $100 to $200 for the pair (again, assuming cleaned and crack checked). The intake, distributor, water pump and most other parts are worth scrap value. OK, you can make the truck distributor into a neat-o pre-oiler :). And the oil pan and timing chain cover are worth something. And those 2.5 inch exhaust manifolds. And the crank, if it's good, has value.

I suspect if you want to maximize your profits, you would sell it as components rather than as a whole. The blocks can go anywhere from a $1000 on up depending on condition.

Hope that helps some, good luck!

i used a truck block back in the early days with jahns pistons, and got good results because of the unshrouding of the ex valves, its still alive and well with aluminum rods. but i dont abuse it like i used too...

That casting number can be a car or truck block but by looking at the left front of the block the 2 bosses look to be drilled and tapped for truck mounts. What is the stamped. code in front of passenger side cylinder head on the machined flat edge?

We’ll get a look at the cylinders and post a shot.
thanks

It has drilled holes on both sides of the timing cover which would suggest truck block.
I see the spot now, taking a look at my 409.

Guy came to my place to buy an Xframe, mentioning his 409.
I feel bad for him. He paid 5000$ cdn

doesn’t look good for him

thanks

Here’s that 656 block
We had to do some scooby doo unmasking of the Deck code.

So am I following this right, your saying this guy paid $5000 for a used 409 truck engine thinking it was a car 409?If he is gathering parts to build a car, while the price he paid for the engine is excessive the fact it is a truck motor really has no bearing on the authenticity of his project a clone is still a clone whether it has a car or truck based 409.The engine will need rebuilding anyway so it can easily be rebuilt to approximate a car 409 with the exception of the heads.

Depending upon his useage/power goals are, don't be too quick to dismiss those 333's eighter. He's got the foundation for 470 plus hp right there.

Can’t make a good car replica with those truck heads?
what’s the difference, performance wise?

I'm not dissing the 333's by any means they're going to be the heads on my engine,I'm just pointing out the small port vs large port compatibility, while things can be made to work its not a bolt on intake wise.Anyway the shortblock is the foundation with the availability of aftermarket heads and intakes you can always upgrade down the road if you feel the need.
