Double hump 3917291 information

Looking at a local listing for a set of 3917291 bare heads that claim to be reworked by Crane. They have Crane C4069 1591 stamped on the original double hump chevy casting mark. Casting date is J 2 7. Not sure if they are really something the Crane would have reworked for Chevy or just something someone has stamped to make a clone/fake set of heads. Any info/value about these is appreciated.

I can't speculate on the value but Crane back in the 70's marketed a series of small block ported heads under the name of Fireball heads. It's very possible that that's what you're looking at here.I never owned or worked with a set so I don't know if or how well they worked.

There are 291, 462 and 461 original double hump heads that GM made -they all have different CC volumes.
461 double hump heads were used on 1962 to 1964 300HP 327s from the factory along with larger exhaust and a carter AFB carb and used into 65 to 67 as I recall.
291 heads were used in 67 to 69 on 302, 327 and 350 engines

Do you have pictures of the part numbers and date codes ?

I have a mint original rebuilt set of 461 double hump heads(62 CC ) -that are extra.
I have had a number of 461 sets rebuilt and ported and put in 2.02 valves

They didn't rework for Chevy, they sold them aftermarket. Probably decent for the time but there are better "newer" heads available if it's just performance you want. For nostalgia then they good.

I have some pictures of pictures as these are for sale online. I don't need the for a build but wondered if they would be good to get and complete and resale. The seller is asking $550.00 which I think is very high for bare heads.

As an example for prices - I would sell my fresh ready to bolt on 461 double hump 327 heads with new stainless valves, new springs, new guides, new seals, plus ported for extra CFM for $ 975.
so yes for bare heads that is high.

I have a set of 462 202 heads I would let you have cheap, missing 1 intake valve but need to be gone thru. But we are far apart geographically, North Carolina to Texas.
