NASCAR 1965 Impala
Roy Mayne's 1965 Impala
Deserves a good home, agreed? Most of the handful of '65 Chevys that ran in NASCAR used H-M 5-on-5 wheels and brakes, but this one appears to use the formerly ubiquitous (for Chevys) 6-lug wheels. Perhaps this belongs in the "For Sale" section, but my purpose for posting it was to point out the existence of an obscure piece of Chevrolet NASCAR history. Apologies in advance if it has to be moved. |

Wow! That thing is kinda neat! Check out that factory heater delete plate. I wonder what engine that car was raced with? I know he says it was a 409 but it almost looks like "427" on the hood. If it was a 409, I wonder if it had the Z-11 High Port heads with the rare single 4 BBL arrangement. The Fords, Plymouths, and Dodges were flying in '65 and I can't help but think a regular 409 would have really had it's hands full that year.

In early 65 the 427 engine of choice would have been the"Mystery,if he could have found one,and parts.Perhaps the 409 could work on the short/or dirt tracks,as they raced on both back then.In late 65 producti on [after feb.]the engine of choice would have been the hp 396,with .125 overbore[427]

It would be my guess that this would have been the motor they used, the "Mystery Motor was not allowed in Nascar after the '63 season.

Its going to a good home.
Hi guys, just want to update everyone. I was the one who purchased the car on Ebay and its going to a good home.
You can see all the information on the restoration of the car including its history (which I am gathering, and its extensive!) here on my blog: http://NASCARImpala.com — I plan to carefully and respectfully restore the car to as-raced condition to race in vintage events here on the west coast. **Something you guys could help me out on: I need a motor. Preferably a 409 or 427 Nascar spec motor. Now I believe they were mostly stock back then but I don't know much about cars of this era or where to even begin to get a motor? Appreciate the help ** Please PM if you can help. Thanks! shaun |

Congratulations on getting the car.
![]() I can see by the history info that it had a great career as a race car. I'm glad to see the right guy got it.

65 block
I have standard bore block Sept 11 (230 julian date) JE code (340 hp powerglide), even has the vin tarrytown , NY plant. Will not be cheap, just want to be up front.
Also have ready to go 340 hp heads. Depends if you want the look or hard core restoration on the heads, (should be high HP 583 castings.) Kevin

Check out his progress: http://NASCARImpala.com
Some of the bits in this car are believed to be sourced from the Rex White '62 Bel Air. The third owner of that car, Tom Hunter, re-skinned it as a '64. When they built the '65 they used the six-lug hubs and wheels as well as the rear floater from the older car. |
