Generally I didn’t try to run it at “ street race “ trim when raceing at local drag strip. You never knew where your next 20 dollar pay day would come from.

61 Impala with 62 409/409, 7” worn out slicks in 1964 ran low 13’s all day long. Then those pesky valve springs/valves did that float thing cracked almost each week, broke rocker arms, pushrods and other assorted stuff.

My biggest challenge was lack of traction!! I never remembered anything but a rolling start then jump all over it!!! Up until ‘65 I think we had flag men.
Anyway, I always wondered what a stock one with good tires would really do!!

A well tuned stock 62-64 car would,with todays track prep and todays tires would run a second faster or better,as long as it didn't scatter the drivetrain first.Just my opinion.

Mid to low 13s is what i remember for a well tuned stock class 409 with some of the hot dogs/local race cars in the mid to high 12s.

I built a 265 for a guy, novice, he decided one day to shift at I think about 45,000 RPM or something like that!!

I bet if I went out to where that track used to be, now a housing addition, take a metal detector I could still find sh_t everywhere!!!

I think all that was left was the decal off the oil filter canister!!

My street driven factory 380 hp 409 ran high 13s @ 100+ 370 gear on bucron tires. It was never beaten in a street race.

With a around 12/1 compression, my .060 over with bone stock heads, good valve job and stock 64 cam went 11.85 about 118.
4010# with my large butt in it....and a 5.13 rear

Never ran mine at Green Valley just Dallas International but watched a lot of races at Green Valley. The cheater slicks hooked pretty decent and the aluminum flywheel did not hit things too hard. Well except the time on the street with teh 5000 side step and the pumpkin I had bought had a ring gear spacer plate! Ripped out all the ring gear bolts in front of my friend's house.

I forgot to mention that my 380 hp was in a 60 impala with s heavy duty 3 speed column shift and 348 valve covers and air cleaner
Easy to see why I got lots of street race action.

New valve springs are what make these cars run. Back in the day, NO ONE haad the technology to make a spring that would let you run 7200 in the traps.I learned my Venolias weighed 952 Grams. That's like 2 pistons by today's standards.
