1958 V8

I bought a 1958 Chevy truck and I'm having trouble with the engine assembly date code & the engine VIN code on the block, it is not the original engine, that is why I would like to know what it is out of.

The engine assembly date/suffix code is: VI204CMJ

The engine VIN number is: 15S118647

I know these numbers are right because they are very clear and easy to read, I got them off of the engine block behind the altenator.

Thanks!

Well, the CMJ part jumped right out at me when I read this as I have 2 of these engines I bought from a local junkyard. I got the first one from a 1974 Impala to put in my truck. (which now has close to 200,000 miles on it!) I recently bought another with the same code from a 68,000 original mile 1975 Impala. Both are 350's of about 145hp. Not alot of horsepower for sure but work great for my daily driver truck.

P.S. starting for 1970, the suffix codes have 3 letters instead of only 2 for previous years. It's an easy way to tell if pre-70 or post-70 without looking anything up. :brow
