1962 409 casting numbers

I'll bet someone here has an idea why. I bought a complete 1962 409, I'm talking carbs to pan, generator, fan, dist.. All numbers are there and appear correct, but the block casting number, 3788068, the 88 appears to be ground off and then 88 is then stamped on the block, all the other numbers appear untouched.

Not unusual. I have one that is 3755068 instead of 3788068.

I'm guessing your casting date is K-27-61 and it was cast on conveyor 6. Apparently someone loaded the new dates into the mold as 3755068 instead of 3788068. When the error was discovered on shakeout most blocks were ground out and corrected by overstamp…a few made it out the door without correction. Same thing happened on the first 61 409 castings.

Your photo of the casting number looks exactly like mine, the casting date on mine is K-25-61. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, I was sure someone would know why.

Appears that it took at least two days to notice the casting error!
