Ok, in an effort to help a new guy.

1962_Impala, what everyone has been saying is just be careful. Guys on this forum have decades of experience and everyone really hates to see anyone taken advantage of.

Go back again to the car, get a flashlight, ask the seller to help, like what has been shared, on the drivers side at the back of the block just below the cylinder head is a flange that is protrudes a couple of inches. The bell housing bolts to this flange. On the flange you will see a number beginning with “3”, 7 numbers in all. Post that number and anyone here will be glad to help.
If the owner built the car he will know exactly what you are looking for, if not or he plays dumb you might want to be careful.
The guys here know everything you can imagine about these engines, trust them. Yes, even Phil :)
Do your research first, don’t let your desire override common sense. It sounds like a nice car, but check first. If you are concerned about rust get a magnet and place it on various spots close to suspect areas, too much bondo and the magnet will not stick.

If the buyer objects, run!!
