I wouldn't bother changing the rear gear.Just use gears 1,2,and go through the traps in 3rd.If you get a drag radial that's 8 inches wide, and 26 inches tall,100 mph will put you through at about 6200 rpm with the 3.55's that are in the car now.I think that I remember that you folks dyno'd that engine, but don't remember the peaks, but 6200 is a safe number given the way that engine was built. If it wants to go higher than that, grab 4th.

Here is the engine specs
63 409-425, 690 heads, 881 intake, 3361/3362 carbs, single point vac advance distributor, Stahl headers (older than me)
  • .030 over with Ross pistons (lightened)
  • Eagle 6.135 rods
  • stock crank
  • 10.5:1 compression
  • 690 heads, resurfaced .010, Manley valves, guides, pocket ported and streamlined valve guides
  • Lunati hydraulic roller cam +2 degrees advanced; 4-7 swap
  • Comp cams 1.7 roller rockers
  • Rebuilt and curved distributor with pertronix conversion
  • balanced
  • Alot more but don't want to bore you!
Did the aftermarket trailing arms, adjustable panhard, dual reservoir master cylinder, discs on the front, inland empire telescoping drive shaft with the upgraded center carrier; I went through the entire suspension, replumbed and rewired the entire car. Battery in trunk. No power steering, no power brakes, no heat, nothing!

Although I in the trades and have built engines, even moonlighted at a machine shop, I did not have the guts or experience with a W engine. Since this one is the "holy grail" to me, I must give all the credit to JB's auto machine in Rosedale, MD. Old time machine shop, family owned and been around along time. I told them how I wanted it built and even picked out the parts; but did not do the assembly or break in. I have a 348 I am going to put together in my shop, now that I have learned a bit. I had been wanting a 409 ever since I saw one on a start stand at Carlisle in the 80's when I was a teenager. The transmission was done by southern automatic in Sykesville, another old shop. But everything else I did, to include entire rebuild on the rear. I think all 348 and 409's are very special and should be treated with respect. I always give credit where it is due. It pulls like a freight train once she gets rolling!
