Interesting. I wonder if it is as strong as 30 spline axles or if the small spline count on the pinion is the next weak link.

When something has to give, make it the U-joint. It's cheap and easy to replace. I have one Chinese joint in the back yoke of mine. Last break I twisted the ears on a 1330 trans yoke to the tune of $120. I don't recall hearing about problems with the 17 spline pinion.

That's the kit I've been doing for 15+ years... and it had been done decades earlier.

I agree with the concept of create a "weak link". A rear U joint is non-catastrophic.
