I've swapped a 700R4 into my 58 Impala replacing the TH350 that was in it. Can you run the same starter? Or is a different starter required? What starter ?

Should be the same starter, guessing you have a 164 tooth flywheel.

When looking up from the bottom the starter gear only engages the ring gear by maybe 1/8th to 3/16th of an inch. Not what I was expecting to see.
Funny stuff.
Assuming your starter is a block mount since you are replacing a turbo 350,get back under there and check the travel of the starter gear and see if the limited engagement is due to the starter gear reaching its maximum travel in the starter housing or if its due to binding due tooth mesh,if due to tight tooth mesh it may be as simple as shimming the starter.If due to starter gear at max. travel then it is a much more complicated issue which may be due to wrong starter,wrong flexplate,or incorrectly assembled starter if it is a rebuilt.
