4 speed transmission question

i had a 4 speed Muncie in my 63 with a 409. The transmission side plate had the shifter plate that had studs to mount the shifter arm plates. The transmission was worn out so I purchased a rebuilt transmission that had a side cover that used bolts to attach the shifter plates. It is a hurst shifter. The problem is the plates will not attach because the openings are not wide enough. My question is can the shifter forks be changed to a stub type so I can use the shifter? Or do I need to get a new shifter. Thanks.

You can change the forks if yours are still in good condition.
The later forks went to the bolts because they were stronger.

Talked to a tech that knows a lot about Hurst shifters, and he said just change the shift arms (3). 69 was the changeover year that they went to the bolt holding the arms. The transmission are identical other wise. The arms are identical except for the oval openings that either the stub or bolt goes through. A good machinist can actually modify the opening to use a pre 69 arm on the new trans.
