409 Installation

Hello and thank you for your posts to my quest for information. I bought a 62 Impala 409 without an engine or transmission. The owner lost it or sold it or blew it up, don't know the real answer however when I purchased the car, it was without an engine or transmission. I'm starting over and could use some advice. I located a 409 and I see there are T10 transmission on the WEB for sale however, where do I get a proper bell housing and or proper clutch assembly? Does anyone have leads on parts. Also looking for the bars to support the rear axle to the body.

Any knowledge to be aware of or direction for parts would be appreciated.

Just curious, but your car came without the 409 engine and transmission, so how do you know it's an original 409 car?? Doesn't really matter to me, just wondering. Best wishes with your parts search, Carmine.

Thank you for your message regarding my Impala. When I purchased the car, it was a basket case and not represented as a 409 car, it is a convertible however and the front clip was from a 409 as it had the original factory emblems. I disassembled and restored the car as if it just came off the chevy line. I like them when they are original. It has 8 coats of lacquer Roman Red and 10 coats of lacquer clear coat. Original style red bucket seat covers and interior, new White top.

Today I have a 1968 327 with a Muncie M20 as a drive line. I had the 327 for years on my stand and it was rebuilt, all the other parts I found or was directed to to install the 327 with a 4 gear. To make a long story short, not all parts were correct. I installed and removed the 4 speed and clutch seven times before everything was correct. I would never want to go through that again so I thought I would seek some help from this group.

The 409 was on FB Market and its a 64 dual quad engine, reuilt by a gentleman that was building a car however he passed before completion. The engine is still on the skid from the engine builder and missing the distributor, water pump, harmonic balancer and pulleys, no exhaust manifolds. It does however have the intake and dual carbs installed. I would like to have that 409 with a T10 just as if it was original. Just for me, not selling it.

Nice red 62 SS Convertible -welcome to the site -help waits.

I have frame off restored 3 -62 SS 409 convertibles. 2 Roman Red convertibles -one red 62 SS in 1997 & one red 62 SS for a friend finished in 2018. I just finished my Nassau Blue 1962 Impala SS 409 convertible. Also restored 3 -1962 Impala and Impala SS Hardtops.
I can help with the transmission, 4 speed shifter, clutch items, and clutch linkage and the engine correct items (it looks like you could have most of the right items) on your 64 409 motor -both red 62 SS 409 cars were built to factory specs.

The important thing is to not mix the clutch linkage, clutch forks, bell housings and pedals from different years unless you know how they fit. Your M-20 Muncie 4 speed will work fine with your 409.

Thanks for your reply and you have a great collection. You hit the nail on the head and that is the trouble i had with the 327 install, had a 64 bell housing with a non 62 clutch fork and a through out bearing that was too short. Looking for these parts and would like to order as much as I could from the same vendor. I also need parts to complete the engine as you can see no harmonic balancer, pulleys or water pump. Starter, distributor for starters.

I don't know, after putting in the 409 in our 63 I think putting in a BB Chevy would be easier. I don't know how I ever did it in the 70's so many times, seems like I have engine dementia.

I am sending you a private message for the questions you have.
I have been through all the options and places to purchase all the items you list and I currently do 4 speed conversion items from my left over 62 parts from my restorations.

The carbs on your 409 motor are not the correct carbs (from the factory). Also 1962 factory 409's did not have chrome valve covers -they were painted. Chrome valve covers started in 63. I comment on these items "if you want a factory original engine look on your 62".
Attached are pictures of a factory correct 62 409 2-4 motor from my 62 Impala 409 that I sold a few years back(its missing the oil fill cap in these pictures and the radiator cap is not correct).

Thank you, that was one of the questions I had. The valve covers, thought they would be orange. Thank you very much for the pictures and your assistance. Are you looking to sell parts or are you interested in performing the swap and restoration of my 409? I'm in Cleveland Ohio

For the bell housing it is aluminum 3779553..They are for sale on eBay, but are expensive. A common problem is they develope cracks and the threads strip and need repairing. I used a cast iron 3779552 that is identical and a lot cheaper. I think GM painted them anyway in the 409 passenger cars. Less expensive and stronger works for me. I used a Luk rep set for the clutch, online from various suppliers.

I sent you a e-mail on parts.
I am about 900 miles from you in western Iowa.
I have restored with local friends other persons cars. Changed a 61 Chevy from a 348 Turbo glide to a 409 380 HP 4 speed, finished 2 different 63 Impalas for friends ( one 409 car and one 327 SS 4 speed car), plus a 62 Chevy bubble top frame of 327 4 speed car build to look like a 409 except with a 327/ 300 HP motor

and finally did a friends 62 SS 409/409 HP red/red 4 speed frame off restoration in my garage in 2017 & 2018 ( after he paid for body and paint work at a selected by me restoration shop on a 62 SS Convertible restorable car that I found for him). I did my frame off restoration of my 62 SS 409 Nassau blue convertible from 2014 to the end of 2018.

My friend who does all my 409 motor transmission and frame assembly work on all the cars noted above
and my cars from 10/15 years ago has a son who lives in Cleveland.

Very nice 62 409/409 well done.
One comment, the front end plate on the generator is not correct for a 409 car.
I learned about the 409 generator plates from Phil Reed years ago.

Bob....generator is 35amp for 61-62 409s...part number 1102268. They have cast iron end frames. Contact Chicago Corvette for the repos. I used to stock them but am retired now. The end frames have bearings for the armature. The normal generators had bushings.

I had a supply of NOS rock fuel filters. They are all gone now. Check Chicago Corvette for that also.

I would have exhaust manifolds powder coated for longer wear. Order a stainless choke baffle plate after powder coating and you have an NCRS type resto!!!!! I've also had the whole system powder coated....look awesome for the rest of my lifetime!!!!! Get a rubber stamp for the resonators and you've in like Flint!!

Bob..call me if you have any other questions.
