409 marking

Good day folks. I posted this photo on my 63 Impalas SS 409 restoration thread under member builds but thought I would start a new thread here.
I removed my front clip yesterday prepping for my restoration. To my surprise, written upside down on the inside of my passenger fender in orange grease pencil was “409”. Very cool. It must’ve been written there for workers on the line or possibly to tell someone to punch the fenders for the 409 badge? Has anyone seen this before? It’s far too much of a coincidence to be just some random “409” written on the fender.
thanks.

All right! I have seen only one set of fenders like that in 50+ years. Don't get rid of those pencil writings. Clear coat them. Finish and paint around them! Chuckl

Found these markings on the firewall and the driver’s side of the cowl after careful cleaning. “20” “4” others I can’t read and a “3” A “2” on the passenger cowl.
maybe you guys will be able to tell...
Bart

Is it a 4 spd ? The area of the cowl where your 4 is crayoned is a location where 4sp or spd is put. Not sure if you can make, out the stuff under the 4

Certainly possible 4 spd. Car came with no trans or radiator, but did come with an auto brake pedal, which could’ve been added...that may also explain why the wrong auto shifter from a 66 Nova was installed on the floor...
