59 Bell Housing

Been cleaning up in the garage. Not luckey enough to find forgotten 409 heads and blocks like Russ. But have a look at this bell housing, in faint letters it says 4 speed in oil crayon. Anyone ever see this? it is virgin piece and I never notced until I cleaned the oil and crap off it today. April 7 1959 sound right from casting date. Just curious and creating conversation

Could have been something that was done at an assembly plant, here is a picture of the passenger side cowl on my 62 SS that I found when I removed the fenders.

My 67 Corvette has a 300 hp 327 and the suffix code is HE, some years back I cleaned the front of the engine off while I had the radiator out and noticed a crayon mark about 2" tall on the front of the head that said HE. They put crayon marks all over the place on cars going down the line for quick and easy identification.

Whoever wrote it it was long enough ago to keep the paint from coming off and metal underneath rusting as it did in areas around it.
