What type compressor was used in 61? And- are brackets available to mount the A-6 compressor on a W engine in a 61? Did 62 & later have the A-6 compressor, or when did it start ? I assume it mounted on the passenger side? thanks

yes passenger side.
There are brackets for a compressor. They used a A-6 compressor on a 409. A-6 on 62's.
The 61 compressor is slightly different than the A-6 - & used a gas valve,
but I think the mounting brackets are the same.

I am currently installing a A-6 compressor on my 62 SS 409 Convertible.

On the Show Cars Inc web site
Under engine external: sub section air conditioning ( page 3 )
part # 5311A - 63 to 65 409 AC bracket also for all 348 & 409 w/A-6 compressor for $ 289.00

I have one of these 409 A/C powder coated black brackets on my 62 Impala SS 409. One of the mounting connections uses one of the head bolts, the other 2 go to the factory holes in the head.
If you have a 409 pan with a passenger side dip stick you must use a factory air dipstick that Show Cars sells.
