Gonna use one of the new smilies: :gaah

Ordered a new pitman shaft seal from Rock auto but it's too big! It's outside measures 1.56 inches and after removing the old one, that one measures only 1.44 :facepalm

Anyone know what the correct part number might be and where to get one? The wrong one I got was a National seal 50151S.

Help. :pout

P.S. on rockauto they say this part number fits all of these:

BUICK(1946 - 1959)
CHEVROLET(1946 - 1964)
FORD(1946 - 1948)
INTERNATIONAL(1960 - 1978)
OLDSMOBILE(1947 - 1963)
PONTIAC(1946 - 1964)
Please refer to catalog for application details.

I'm a bit doubtful of that!!! :mad5

Bob, they show two gear box choice , manual or power steering. The ps one is 1.75 outer and shaft size is 1.25 so it is bigger yet than what you have . Apparently you ordered manual ,but you do have ps ram assist cylinder system, don't you????

I changed it all to manual due to leaks of the old system. I got this from a 63 Impala. It's just the box, nothing else. I have the sinking feeling I'm screwed! :irk

I'll be darned! I just checked rock auto and put in 1965 this time. I think we have a winner:

NATIONAL 313842

MaterialNitrile
Shaft Size1.125"
Housing Bore1.438"
Outer Diameter1.444"
Width0.215"

I didn't know the box from a 65 would fit a 63. :scratch

A little contradiction on their part: (notice the Chevrolet here is 1960-86 and the one above says 1946-64) :doh :scratch :angry

PONTIAC(1962 - 1979)

I took it from a 63 Impala, I can still remember the car clearly. I got the pit man arm and drag link with it. I'm gonna get the casting number from the box later and see if that tells anything.

Something is definitely odd though. Something rotten in Denmark. :D (what does that mean anyway?) :scratch:dunno:think

Bob,

you could take your seal into a Bearing distributor who stocks seals, I rebuilt my Power Steering pump and bought a kit from our local Auto Parts store, but it had the wrong size seal, went to a Bearing Distributor and bought the proper seal.

It was more economical for me to do it this way, the kit ( around $ 17) was a high volume low cost for our local stuff, the seal was $ 5-6

I ordered the one for the 65 above. It is showing the correct measurements so should work out.

I have to search some but here are the numbers from the box and pitman arm, curiosity on the year as I know it was a 63 I got it from.

box 5666723 60 Has other numbers too.
Pitman A3820407

Got the seal today and all went well. Surprising how easy it is when you have the right parts! :doh

Stupid rock auto must have their numbers mixed up. The one for a 63 is way too big but the one for a 65 a perfect fit. :dunno

I think I will pick one up and save my old leaky box too Bob. Don't need it at the moment, but I can save it as a backup.

Bob, I did some checking with NAPA on the seal and they list the larger seal also. I think it might be the seal manufacturer that has it wrong?:dunno

Reviving this old post, as I'm going through exactly the same thing right now on my '63 SS!!!
Pitman Arm seal has been leaking for many years now.
All of the online research I've done, says the '63 Chevy uses an oil seal with a 1.50" outer diameter.....
I've tried both an SKF 11067 (1.50" OD) and a SKF 11060 (which is just an RCH smaller) and both are quite a bit too large....
I was just about to give up and search for a rebuilt steering box, when a Google search brought me to this old post!!!
I think this might have just saved me some headaches and cash!!
I'll order a National Oil Seal # 313842 for a '65 Chevy and give it a try!!!
Thanks so much Bob!!! :)

Thanks for the SKF part number 55Brodie!!!
Well, it's a done deal!! A local parts store was able to obtain a National seal #313842 within a couple of hours today!!
First photo is SKF 11067 on the left. This is the seal that ALL of the parts sites say is the correct seal....
Alongside it is the National 313842 seal, which is noticeably smaller and was a perfect fit in my '63 SS.
Second photo is the steering box with the new Pitman Arm Seal installed.
Thanks again guys!!! :)
