Lol you guys crack me up. For what I'm doing with the car, the 2.20 first gear is perfectly fine. I do know a little bit about gearing and such. If the car had a high winding small block, it would have a 3.17 first geared gforce g101a, a 4.88 or 5.13 gear and a 9 inch out back.

I think a lot of people don't understand your intentions for the car. You are more interested in "attitude" than the best performance package. 2.20 first gear isn't ideal but it sure is fun with 4.56 gears once you are rolling.

EXACTLY!!!! I have a racecar for when I want to go fast. And just in case I want to play stoplight to stoplight, I know how to walk the car out of the hole and make it work. Just like launching a drag car with a stick and a drag radial. You slip the clutch and make it work.

auto gear 220 first gear m22 4 speed and a 4.56 gear

That’s a bitchin Impala you got! Very nice car definitely has ‘the look!’ You’re gonna hate that setup, I know I did. I had an auto gear 2.20 trans in my ‘56 for a weekend, got it cheap from a local gearhead figured I’d give it a try. 5.38’s in the rear and 29.5-10.5 M/T slicks and it bogged hard on a 6,000 side step. Engine didn’t start revving again til about the 330’ cone lol. Took that trans out and sold it a couple weeks later. Probably a kick ass trans on a road course!

Lol. Hope not. I've also been looking at quick performance 9 inch rears for the car too. Lol
How about a GM G body 8.5 10 bolt with 3.73 gear, Moser axles, custom fabricated crossmember and adjustable upper control arms, 1 inch narrower per side than stock rear, and no panhard bar causing tire installation headaches?
Pm me for pics, details, price.

Sounds like a very nice setup. However, I really like the ease of changing gears with a 9 inch.

Well not much progress has been made due to the holidays. But got the engine compartment cleaned and powerwashed, the close ratio super t10 has been gone through and has a clean bill of health, and the engine has been dropped off at the builders. Will post more as time allows.

Ok. Sorry all life has been a bit hectic lately, but have made a lot of progress and parts are coming in. Also just took delivery of my new autogear close ratio m22 4 speed. As for the engine, all machine work has been done, new manley rods, pistons, solid roller cam, crower roller lifters, headers got ceramic coated white, new hurst shifter and linkage, cleaned frame and cleaned and painted firewall. Next up is the quick performance 9 inch rear end and it's safe to call the project complete. For now anyways.
