I meant to add about my friends altered wheelbase Plymouth just like the factory, note the class they put him in.

If you used either alky or nitromethane, the only class available to run in at the NHRA National Events in the 1960's was the Fuel Dragster classes. The Funny Car class was not introduced until 1969 and there were no Fuel Altereds allowed either. If you used gasoline, you could run in the Altered Classes if you had an altered wheelbase car. If your Match Race car had the stock un-altered wheelbase, you could run in the Gasser Classes.

Stone-Woods & Bones Mustang ran in the Gasser class at NHRA Events and also as a Match Race car the rest of the season (it was Chrysler powered)...

The same for Ohio George's SOHC powered Mustang.

Since GM never offered a Factory Experimental car to their Chevy racers, I'm going to use Hayden Proffitt's Mercury Comet for an example.

The same car after Hayden modified it by sliding the body back a couple of inches. This is after NHRA permitted a 2% set-back as legal for the FX classes.

This is after Hayden threw in the towel on the NHRA FX class, and went full on into Match Racing. Maybe, most of the Chevy racers were lucky that GM did not offer legal FX cars from the factory, they were able to avoid NHRA's FX classes (little if any cash even if you were the class winner) and go directly into Match Racing...

Everyone knows about Hayden Proffitt's '62 S/S Chevy and how he switched to Plymouth in 1963, but how many have ever seen a photo of his '63 Z-11 that he ran prior to the Plymouth deal kicking in? He ran this car at the 1963 NHRA Winternationals, in the Limited Production class, as the Z-11's were deemed illegal for S/S competition...

Hayden’s Z-11 was sold to Clyde McKnight in Ft Worth, Texas. Clyde was a used car dealer. He raced it some and has never been located, believe me I’ve looked.
