ALUMINUM 62 DASH PANEL / COMPARISON

I have been most fortunate to acquire an aluminum dash panel for my Bubble Top project! The two aluminum dash panels that I know of are not as finished as the stock pot metal dashes. I have decided to keep the dash in its' original raw state (clear coated). I am sanding out a ton of the imperfection in the casting, but some are going to remain. After I complete the sanding, the panel will be media blasted with plastic beads, They do not etch as bad as glass.

I thought that I would do a comparison of the aluminum vs. the stock pot metal unit.

Stock unit: 13.8 lbs to 14.2 lbs, (multiple times on the bathroom scale)
Aluminum Unit: 5.2 lbs.

If anyone can help with the reason that these pieces were produced, please chime in. For factory lightweight?......NASCAR?......

Pat Lobb has the other dash in his black 62 lightweight car, but has no his real answer as to why these exist.
