ALWAYS bead blast used aluminum manifolds!

Getting the new 231 Buick V6 ready for my Sandrail, scored a rebuilt engine on the "cheap".

I did not want to use the single plane manifold that came with it, so I decided to use the Edelbrock that came with the buggy.

Cleaned it in the parts tank, then used some mag wheel cleaner too.
Pretty clean, but not good enough for a new engine, so I glass bead blasted it.

ONLY after Glass Bead blasting was I able to make out a hairline crack which extends into one of the intake ports!

It would have really annoyed me to melt a piston due to a lean cylinder caused by this crack.

It will get welded up tomorrow, but this is a good reminder to never take short cuts. :nono1:

Your right on Rich. bin there done that:doh and don't want to revist that. all used manifolds that I'm planning on using get blasted and checked for cracks and warpage the aggravation that comes with not doing it is just not worth it:mad:

Whew!

Good save!

I had a Buick V6 out of a 1963 Skylark stuffed in a VW with a Porshe transaxle back in the early 70s. It needed a wheelie bar :)
