You can't imagine the number of aluminum intakes at swap meets that have been glass beaded or sandblasted with the cover still on!!!!! Would instantly ruin an engine on startup!!!!

I popped one off a 348 cast iron intake a few years back and after cleaning the black nasty stuff found a HUGE four inch crack underneath that splash pan . From the looks of it up top (it was painted Chevy Orange) you never would have guessed it....

Try and see how the old drive rivets fit, you can peen the hole closed and rotate the pin so the knerl is in a new location.

Good thing Phil said that about the pan coming off to get the shit out as I just finished up the bottom end of a motor that is going to get an 881 intake that I believe was glass beaded so it's coming off! So what's the best way of getting the rivets out so I can put new ones in? Don't want to tap and use screws.

I'll take a picture tomorrow of a tool the owner of Topeka, KS gave me about 30 years ago.

I just used a small chisel and carefully pried them out as was suggested

Carter tool. Believed for the removing of the aluminum plugs in the front carb bases.

Looks like it could be used on brass rivets on backside of clutch hubs for pans and shovels
