No reason he couldn't have used the gold for many decades, other than too tight to spend it.

That was his problem. He drove a worn out 57 Lincoln, his house and yard was pretty run down and his old lady talked incessantly and made Edith Bunker sound like a genius in comparison to her. He stayed drunk all the time to deal with it. Pretty sad.
