What prevented him from shifting to neutral or depressing the clutch pedal to let the engine blow?
We used them in our rear engine dragster. All controls were within reach including the para-shoot lever.......
With restraints attached as per specs your arms would not leave the cockpit.........
During spot checks in the staging lanes an official would attempt to shake your hand from a distance,
if you were able to reach his hand.....
..... you were dutifully instructed about proper safety.......

If the problem was a broken motor mount and the engine was twisted he may have been unable to shift into neutral.....
Many blower cars (I don't think this is one) have a fuel shutoff because just killing the ignition may not kill the motor
due to extreme high temps in the cylinders dieseling the motor on........
Here's one you have to shake the mold off + plus you might need to use the mute button to nix the music. It has no sound but it a reminder of what it used to be like in those days providing you're old enough you might have to shake the mold off yourself from time to time.

El Bel Airo from this video still exists and I almost purchased it about 15 years ago. It was a Wisconsin-area drag car that went out to SoCal about 5 years ago. Supposedly a real Black-on-Red Bel Air Sport Coupe 409 car but just really cut up.
If it was a blower car, it's possible the seals went out and the motor ran wild. Don't know if they run a flap to shut the air intake off or not....like on a Detroit. Really dangerous being a spectator. Lucky no one was killed.
