Here are a few pictures I took of my '61 Biscayne.
My firewall was definitely body color as you can tell.
The bottomside of the hood was black, but it is very difficult
to tell what color the bottomside of the body was painted.
It may have been black at one time, but mine was so weathered
that it looks like it could have been red primer too. I would
say it was not body color though.
My car had the factory original paint on all but the white top,
so I'm sure this scheme is factory original.
I hope this helps!
I would love to see pics of your car...you can see progress pics of my car on
other threads.

I agree with Danny. Firewall is body color down to the bottom of the toe board where it meets the floor pans. the underside of my 61 is red oxide.

Danny- you look a little overwhelmed in that first pic! :roll

That really does help. THe guy painting it said he looked in his book and said everything is black but your pictures are worth a thousand words to me. I have one of the original 409 Biscayne Fleetmasters and am restoring it so I want to come close if i can. Picking up material to read also but to no avail have I found anything on the painting. Another guy just wrote me this morning and he is in the know and said the same as you.. Appreciate it and looks like you have a great project. Like to see it when it is done. I will try to post pictures on my car but I think I will have to get my guru kids to help when they come for Xams and that reminds me.. Merry Christmas to all...

Firewall was body color up until early 1963 model year. I've seen some Janesville Wisconsin cars from early november that still had a body color firewall.

Have your painter look for any inspection markings on the firewall. Might see some above the heater box, near where the steering column goes through, and on the extreme left and right sides of the firewall. Just in case you would want to recreate those after the painting.

My sedan is a Belair, but it was body color to the seam, and red oxide underneath and inside.

Unanimous guys. Thanks alot..I knew if there were someone out there that knew you would be the ones to ask. The only one that tells me that it was black is the painter so I guess I need to make a phone call.. Appreciate all of you
