I would try to save the '83 as well as the '62.

I can't remember, was it 1982-3 that production moved from St. Louis to Kentucky? Might be the reason for a halt in production.

I'm sure there was a good reason for each of those cars to be in display, to each his own :).

My first born is a Civil Engineer, mainly on the aeronautical side (think runways), I bet he'd be interested in how this could happen!

Looked it up in Wikipedia:

The fourth generation Corvette was the first complete redesign of the Corvette since 1963. Production was to begin for the 1983 model year but quality issues and part delays resulted in only 43 prototypes for the 1983 model year being produced that were never sold. All of the 1983 prototypes were destroyed or serialized to 1984 except one with a white exterior, medium blue interior, L83 350 ci, 205 bhp V8, and 4-speed automatic transmission.[4] After extensive testing and modifications were completed, it was initially retired as a display sitting in an external wall over the Bowling Green Assembly Plant's employee entrance. Later this only surviving 1983 prototype was removed, restored and is now on public display at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It is still owned by GM.[41][42] On February 12, 2014, it was nearly lost to a sinkhole which opened up under the museum. Eight Corvettes were lost. [43]

Pretty up-to-date, wouldn't you say?

Heard today on radio they have just started construction to repair it! Supposedly it is still open and they have plexi glass set up around so visitors can see the sink hole and the work being done.

If you want up to date news about the Corvette Museum, see if you can get on Facebook under Wendell Strode. He's the Executive Director of the National Corvette Museum. I have been watching what is happening since day one, since he is a member of my Army Facebook page. (Americal Division)
