Distributor clocking and oil pump priming

I sure this question has been asked and answered before but.... What is the proper orientation of the distributor in regards to getting proper oiling when installed. Also, any issue using an old 409 distributor that has been stripped to use for priming the pump?
Thanks Guys!

Look at the base of your dist./primer,there'll be a groove. If the groove goes all the way around, then it won't matter where the clocking is.If it's a partial groove, then you can either open it up all the way around,or when you put it in,locate the vac.advance mount in the approximate position that it would be positioned in on a normal engine.

Don, do the new distributors they sell now have the grooves all the way around? What was the original purpose for putting the grooves only partially around the housing? Thanks

I have a factory 348 and a factory 409 distributor. One has the groove all the way and one doesn't. As long as the part of the body without the groove doesn't face to the front or rear of the engine then it won't block any oil flow.
