what kind of steel rims and back spacing necessary, i have discs on the front thinking of staying with 14"

I tried a set of late 60's vintage 14x7 wheels and they hit my tie rod ends, I picked up a set of 15x6 wheels from a wagon that don't hit.Just my 2 cents.

15 inch stock GM wheels will take the stock dog dish, look for some early 70's wheels with the nubs for the dog dish caps, most will have backspacing that will be fine. Mine are off a 71 Nova SS and much easier to find 15 inch rubber than 14 inch.
