Looking at it up closely, it seems the metal had been cracked for a while, and they are notoriously week anyway. My question is, can I just buy the upgraded poly carrier bearing, or do I have to get the whole upgraded shaft?
In some cases that I've heard about, that poly bearing will be rather short lived unless a telescoping rear drive shaft section is used.It kinda makes sense.
As long as you don't hook up real good you should be ok. I beat on my 409/340hp several years on the street and didn't break anything. Can't believe it.
The OEM center support bearings go bad with time even in a old ladies grocery getter. If you're just "driving " the car then a poly bushing is more then good enough. If you're burning out, power shifting on a regular basis then the Inland Empire telescoping driveshaft is the way to go or convert to one piece drive shaft which is a pita
I will say inland empire makes a great product, but any compentent driveshaft company has the same components. I had my 2 piece built by a company here in Iowa upon the recommendations of a racer here that recently passed away. I've been beating on it with a 4200# stick car for several years.
