How to replace the dead battery in your battery. :D (Antique Auto Battery)

Well. This is the 3rd I've done. I think we have another 3 more that are completely dead so by the time I'm finished with the last one I'll have perfected this process. :D
Getting it apart is not hard. But getting the dead battery out is a pain since its glued to the bottom of the case.

On Pat's '67 Ferrari. That Case was full of glue/adhesive you name it so I ended up cutting a section of the bottom. Once I had the dead batteries(yes this one had 2 small ones in it) out I was able to glue the bottom back on the case. Either way enjoy the pics! And take your vitamins! :)

I start with a sonicrafter on the center of each side. I make the cut in an angle so when you go back with the top it doesn't go past where it was...

Then I used a reciprocating air saw from the center to the corners...

I lucked out on the first one I did as the battery was loose in the case. I'm not sure what they use to glue them to the case but I wonder if there's any chemical that could help loosen it up?

Don't start beating it out you may crack the case. I cracked the one for the Ferrari but was able to glue it back!

These next pics are the Ferrari case to continue as I don't have the new battery for the Delco case yet...

This is the one I broke so the tape around the box was to hold it together. I used 3M Panel Bond adhesive(#08115). This stuff is on the expensive side but worth every penny. I used the same stuff to glue the top back on.
On the second pic you can see where I taped around the cut. It will keep it clean when you glue the top back as you let the glue cure. It will dry semi glossy like the top of the case.

The battery options are endless just make sure to measure the case before you buy a new one. Also I wouldn't recommend gluing the battery back in that case. You can use some hard foam to keep it from dancing around and if that stupid battery dies you can do it again much faster! LOL

That's it!

I've used panel bond a bunch, that stuff is a little pricy but worth every penny. I been buying Crest Industries brand and it is a little less than 3M about $38 a tube

Al thanks allot. I’ve been wanting to tackle several of my bad ones and was going to use a dremel tool from the side rather the top. It’s pretty obvious why they don’t want them picked up with a battery strap!
