Is this a 409 400-425 hp oil pan?

What 409 does this Oil Pan fit?

I bought this oil pan some time ago and see there are some differences between this pan and one off a 340hp. Are the 400-425hp pans the same as the 340hp pans without the baffle? Considering the condition its in, could this have been for industrial or marine use?

Thanks Ralph

Oil Pan

Ralf,

I'm no expert, but it's my understanding the truck oil pan drain plug was in the middle, where as the car was on the side... Or visa-versa....

Thanks Nuts, I think you are right the car pan has it on the front. I have been looking at all the pictures of 409 motors I can find and I haven't seen one like the one I got. I know they sell windage trays for the 400 and 425 hp motors, but don't know if the pans are different.

Hey Ralph,
I think that the 400/425 pans had a little deeper sump in the front. At least thats what Brad at Phil Reed's told me once. Also, I think that the 400/425 pan had a baffle a little different than the 340 hp pans. My 340 pan has a little larger baffle that kinda surrounds the pick up. Also, the dip stick goes through a hole in the baffle.
I think that the new, reproduction pans are modeled off the 400/425 pans.
A friend of mine pulled an oil pan off of a 65 348 truck engine that had the drain plug facing down, dip stick on the 409 side and no baffle. But its hard to say for sure what yours is off of.

Thanks Ross & Steve.

Interesting Ross. In my original pan the baffle is short and the dipstick is located toward the rear from the baffle. The one thing I forgot to mention is that I picked this pan up in Canada, maybe they had their own design.
