Are you running points? I would simply go to the top right hand corner of this page and type in Ballast Resistor and see what the search brings up. There are several answers on it.
My understanding is that all factory 409’s have a big white ballast resistor on the firewall, near the master cylinder. Other engines have one built into and hidden in the wire harness. The value of the resistor varies with the hp. I think the two wires are pink

If the pos wire going to the coil has a cloth insulation it is a resister wire and you won't need the resistor.
