Main bearing caps

Hi everyone. My question is about main bearing caps. I've always been told that when removing the crankshaft, don't mix up the main bearing caps. Why is that?? Aren't they the same on every main bearing?? I see you can buy after market ones, so I'm wondering how they work. Do you have to custom fit each one?? Do they do this at the factory when initially assembling the motor?? Just curious. Thanks, Carmine.

Yes each cap is you might say is custom fitted to it’s particular position in the block called align boring when the short block is being assemble. They are all set in place in the block torqued to spec and then a boring tool is used to bring the bores to their final bore size and insure a perfectly straight alignment otherwise the crank would bind. When replacing the caps its necessary to have the block and caps realigned bored
