my 327: tuning the timing

sometimes having a lot of initial timing isn't a good thing. I always thought advance makes power. Man was I wrong. I retarded my timing on my MSD mech. distributor a hair last night to see if this would help a slight off-idle stumble I was having and MAN what a difference! Instantly the idle picked up, the motor was running smoother and the stumble was gone. I've been chasing that stumble for months through the carb :doh I was running about 12° initial and now I backed it off to about 9° and its a HUGE difference. No more stumble, smooth idle and FAST starting, and a nice even powerband as you roll into the throttle. Man I love this car when its running good. I suspect that retarding the inital timing should also lower the engine temps a little also which will make the car more stable sitting at a light on hot days this summer.

SO there you have it. Sometimes more isn't better. :) :beerbang
