The bell housing bolts onto the Borg and Warner, you guys said a possible other option is to make a spacer for the smaller retainer :dunno:scratch
From what I understand the TSB says for a replacement part cast iron retainer to use part number; 604932 1000 series cars ( except 409) that’s confusing because it’s not written anywhere for the correct replacement part to use on 409 equipped cars:gamer.with a Borg and Warner 63 aluminum T10D-1 case.2F8C0E02-C6BA-424A-A5C3-2F61529B18EA.jpeg78FF8F3B-6790-42EC-A1D5-9B8615945C24.jpeg

All 63 v8 cars except the 409's (and Chevy II) used Bell housing 3788421 (small bearing) and the 409's used the 553 (normal bearing). Accordingly the T-10 and later 63 only Muncies used a small front bearing retainer while the 409's used a normal sized (same as every year before and after 63) front bearing retainer to fit the small opening bellhousing. Supposedly, any front bearing retainer from chevy 3 or 4 speed other than 63 should work as long as it fits over the bearing and the holes line up. Or....get a different year T-10 or Muncie to replace the small bearing 63 T-10.

Forget the TSB. It only applies to 63 small bearing retainers and is only recommending a change from aluminum retainer to cast iron to save wear and tear, no change in size. You will need to change the small retainer to a normal 62 and earlier or 64 and later .....or use your 64 muncie.....or get a spacer made to use your T-10 without worrying about the retainer size......or switch to a 421 bell and use your T-10.

Parts Catalog Group 4.356 Four Speed Transmission says you need a 57-62 bearing retainer 3709331, 4 11/16 od x 3 3/16 L, forged T-89 B 6.
It's also possible that a 58-62 and 64-65 3 speed front bearing retainer 3741458, 4 11/16 OD x 3 3/16 L will work if the hole spacing is the same.
Looks like T-10's used spring ring retainer and Muncies used a nut.

I want to use my correct dated and casting numbers T-10 with the 553 Bell housing because that’s what I have and that’s what the 409 that I am rebuilding with Tony Shafer at Day Automotive Will be installed with.

I can send you the retainer I have and you would be set. As far as the numbers go, if someone is looking that close, you need to ask the what their intentions are.

Cecil....the 421 clutch opening would not be big enough for the 409 clutch fork...

...in my opinion.

Of course, so you use a 153 tooth flywheel, 327 clutch and fork to fit the bell and trans. Next problem is the starter.
