NASCAR ‘64 Impala

I don’t think there was but a few ‘64 full-size Chevys, and they weren’t exactly front runners. Pictures with any detail are therefore rare, so I was delighted to stumble across this:

Frank Warren. All I know is that it’s the Bubber Farr ‘63 Mystery Engine car, re-skinned. “427” on the hood; Z-11? Tires look wide for 1964, don’t they?

In 1964 the 64 Chevrolets were rinning the 409 motors in NASCAR. Thats all they had, the Mystery Motor was banned and the 396/427 had not come out yet. There was not factory involvement from GM, just a few independents trying to make do with what they had

Wow, Tommy!

What was the origin of that car? Built for ‘64, or modified ‘63 car?

Thanks for posting it!
Bob,
That was a long time ago but the car in the photo is the car that Roy was racing when I met him, back in those days you were allowed to run a car for 3 years in the Cup or G.N. Division. I don't ever recall him driving a 63 Chevrolet but I do recall him driving a 62 so i would say that it was a rebodied 62 Chevrolet. That would make sense because the 64 would have been the last body that would have fit on the 62 X frame. He later ran a 65 Chevrolet before switching to Pontiac's. A short story that sticks in my mind, in 1969 (I think) Roy called me and asked if I would come to Bristol Tn. and help him in the pits so I did. I had just bought a new 1969 VW Beetle, first car I ever owned with a FM radio. My wife and I drove through the night to get to Bristol and we listened to the guys land on the moon, it was live on that FM radio.

Could that be the 1964 body in the photo above?

Anyone who has an interest in NASCAR GN or Modified racing from the sixties should watch the new program called Glory Road. Around here it comes on at 9pm on NBCSN. Tonight the second feature is on Ray Hendricks and Sonny Hutchins and the Wood Bros. modified car
