Got back to work on the 1962 409 Belair sedan. After initially smoothing her out and sealing with 2 part Epoxy, I squirted her with a polyester filler that is a high build easy-to-sand topping. Longboarded that with 320 grit dry, touched up a few select areas, then coated her again with 2 part Epoxy sealer. If I'm close, I can block sand this and get her ready for base coat. That will be done in a booth. So far I've been doing all the prep work in the driveway. My neighbors drive by in amazement :). No one has stopped to help, though.... That long boarding sure is fun...

The shots with the lighter coats show the sprayable filler from EverCoat (a sort of bondo). The satin black is the 2 part Epoxy sealer, which is Transtar 6161. It builds also, and is somewhat easy to sand. The EverCoat comes off like talcum powder, and hopefully gets it fairly flat :).

Enjoy!

Tom, as far as I'm concerned that's the hardest part of doing a car !! It's looking great, keep up the good work even if your arms feel like they are going to fall off. It's definately going to be worth it !!

Some progress

Thanks for the support comments, I've still got a long way to go!

Loren: I took the step ladder out just in case -- didn't need it (it's sometimes good to be 6'5" :)).

Brian: The polyester fill actually comes off rather quickly, like talcum powder. The first coats of the 2 part epoxy I just scuffed enough to provide a "mechanical" grip for the sprayable filler. That wasn't too hard, but since it is "high build" (the primer/sealer) I did use the long board and 220 grit. For the EverCoat polyester I went with 320 on the long board and I bet I finished the big flat areas in about 5-6 hours. Then the little detail areas with a small block took forever. I went over everything with 400 real quick, then sealed it again. Looking at the current status, I think I'll shoot one more coat of sealer/primer (two part Epoxy) then I can see a few areas where I am not yet straight (lower quarters, a ding in the door, etc.) These will get more sprayable filler.

One problem is my "hands" and "eyes" are not that great (even with the glove trick) and I tend to move on to early and coat the area, only to find out it needed more prep...

I still think I am moving from "novice" status to "armed and dangerous" :). And I am sooooo glad that I don't do this for a living! I do have greater respect for those who do. I bet they could cut my hours of prep in half, but then I'd have to pay for that, right?

Cheers!
