If you're referring to the plastic casing on the cable, this cable does have a square cable housing.

Seeing this reminds me that of all the years I have been wrenching on cars I have only worked on one car with the 3 speed overdrive. I replaced the cable, if my memory serves me right it was a 64.
I still have the handle with a bit of the cable that I made a hook tool out of it.
