When you don’t have the fancy pinion holder from the tool store but you have a big wrench.....you improvise...

Tried the u bolts but the bar wouldn’t stay still and it started to bend the u bolts. Plan B was the wrench...

I had to make this one too. The lower control arms on the rear axle have a bolt that goes through a bracket welded to the frame(same one the emerg brake cable goes through). Bolts too long to go the opposite way and the nut is blind. No way to get a socket on it. A wrench is on at an angle but hard to hold and the closed end with the same issue. The access hole isn’t directly below the nut.
I took the closed end of the 15/16 wrench and welded it to the open end. This allows the closed part reach in far enough grab the nut properly. Weld it right and the nut as it’s backing off will pass through the closed part into the open while still holding it.
not sure what they used in 65-70 but this is what I use in 2020!

While it doesn't say it that's the figure for used bearings. For new bearings, the figure is 22-32 inch lbs. At least it is for all other differencials used in Chevrolet cars.

The Chevrolet shop manuals on every thing else from a Chevette on up was pretty much as I posted, and never less than 10.I thought it was strange at the time.I've only had one 12 bolt though and I started with new stuff. I used to do quite a few rear assemblies when I worked at Chevrolet dealerships and in the aaftermarket, but I'm no expert I just know enough to be dangerous.

This is what USA Gear sent with the ring and pinion.
