Poor boys 409 project

Been too long since I made an update on this thing. Put about 2500 miles on it so far. Got it to run a 13.34 @ 105 mph in Julesburg, 3000’ elevation. Drove it there and back 550 miles round trip. Car weighs 3900# with me in it. 2.54 first gear, and a 3.70 rear. Not enough gear to holeshot, especially with sticky tires. Burning the clutch to save the stock chevy rear. It and the trans will get upgraded this winter. I wanna let this thing eat!!!

Sorry for the grainy cell phone pics:thumbdown

Kevin, the 61 looks great!! Ronnie was always partial to the 61 cars. I’m going to post a picture soon of his 61 and 63 builds. Your 63 is one I’m looking forward to seeing finished. BT
Her is a 63 that I built and sponsored for a friend in the mid-80s. It also was a bracket car. 409 -340 -2 Barrell-PG with a 12 bolt. Never broke anything in the 3 years running. 12:70 104.1963 Chev-409-Miland 1987 (1).jpg1963 Chev-409-Miland 1987 (3).jpgSea World and Milan Drag Races-008.jpgSea World and Milan Drag Races-011.jpgSea World and Milan Drag Races-013.jpgFB_IMG_1515299429426.jpg

Some pictures and video shows unavailable! Is it my end or something else.

Blackout for photobucket, I think it’s over now.

Just found and read the thread, the 61 is spot on, great body style, love the interior, sits great, wheel tyre combo, everything is spot on.

Thanks a lot! Was going for that 62-63 look. I took it to a gearhead buddy’s house over the summer (mopar guy) and he told me I should take the chrome reverse off and put aluminum slots on it, he said chrome reverse look ‘cheap’ :laughing:finger

Stock chevy rear just wasn't gonna cut it anymore. Want to race this thing. Sourced a complete '63 Pontiac rear from a junkyard and MW narrowed it to 54.25" flange to flange for 60" wms to wms. Built a jig from a stock chebby housing, used a currie bracket kit. Used a 4.88 ring and pinion and a Trophy Track posi. Used the stock Pontiac brakes and 5 on 5 bolt pattern. Salt Shaker James and Tom K. this one's for you.:good

Thats nice, I see you put a Mark Williams main cap on the ring gear side. :good I got the same rear in my Nova and have another one sitting in my garage for my 62 SS, old school kool!!!! :appl I like that jig you made, that makes placing those housing brackets simple job. :bow Your frame work looks hella stout, I don't think you should have any trouble with that. NICE JOB!!!!

Dropping the lower mounts 3" dropped the ride height by exactly 3" also. Stock springs were weak and certainly didn't help with the wheel hop problem, so I used the extra HD rear springs from Show Cars to increase the spring rate and bring the ride height back up. Global West suspension parts are EXCELLENT!!! The quality of these parts is fantastic, worth every dime paid. I have their entire catalog on the rear of this car and I'm very happy with the investment.
Old vs. New

Kevin the olds/pont. 9.3 is probably one of the strongest rears you could use, the dana 60 I believe is a little stronger but not much. The problem with the 9.3 is parts anymore (thank God for Fabcraft Metals), I decided to use one in my Nova as I am trying to stay as period correct as possible. Back in 1970 I put one in my 62 at the time after breaking MANY Chevy rears and it was the last rear end I ever put in that car. Gotta love those 9.3 rears!!

Agreed 100%. Fabcraft is the saving grace for these axles. Great bunch of guys they have over there at Fabcraft too. That's cool as heck you've had one in your 62 all that time, and now in one of your Nova's. That Nova is bad to the bone btw, injection looks so cool:good

I can see why guys run a Ford axle, since raw material hasnt been made for a 9.3" for 57 years lol. But I just keep finding these things, one after another. Found three '57 Pontiac rears in boneyards around here in the last 3 or 4 years, 200 bucks a head. Found a complete '64 Pontiac 3.08 posi rear in a guys backyard in Pueblo, just sitting in the dirt. Guy didn't know what he had, I offered him 50 bucks and I took it home. My job takes me to all corners of the state and I find all sorts of cool s--t. I'm blessed:D
