My son and I were talking about fully automatic guns and he says that ex-millitary people can own one so long as they buy the stamp, $200.00 I think. I don't know? B.T.

My local gun dealer, about a year ago, went through the process/paper work and obtained a license to own a full auto. I will ask him if he knows about ex-military buying a stamp, but I doubt if it is that easy.

An individual currently can purchase a Class III license to legally own a fully automatic firearm. There is indeed a $200.00 transfer tax and an extensive FBI background check done before the gun is transferred to the buyer. The cost of fully automatic weapons is becoming prohibitive. A WW1 BAR is currently bringing $20,000 and up depending on manufacture and condition. M-60's, Thompsons, and other classic military automatic weapons are very desirable and all command monies that would buy a hell of a nice car or Z-11 motor. Big boy toys for sure!
