Rolled rear oil seal?

TomO and I were talking Saturday morning after the break in of the engine, and we were trying to figure out what might have happened when we fit the oil pan back up after removing the engine and dropping the pan to "open her up a bit"..

We think we might have "rolled" the rear main seal upon re-installation. My question is this: since it takes a bit of time to remove everything just to seal the pan/rear main, is there some way to do this with the engine in place? There's perhaps half an inch there before we hit the crossmember. Maybe the rear of the pan drops even more?

Any advise would be well received. Thanks for your support and encouragement to date :).

Best,

You wanting to pull the pan or just drop it a little? The shop manual details pan removal. You need to turn the engine over until the forward part of the crank gives you the most clearance (think that is with the counterweights up), remove the distributor and the engine mounting bolts, then jack up the engine to remove the pan with the engine in the car.
