Cecil & Phil,
I heard from the "tall one from N.J. and he advised that all 63 Muncies had the small input bearing, the retainer is what was different, the 409 cars got a large retainer so they could use the 553 bell housing, all others got the small retainer for use with the one year only 421 bell housing.. He also said the Flint plant was using T 10's until the end of May.
And he said there is no reference in the parts books to different size shifter handles other than "early and late" so I assume it wasnt connected to the Muncie transmission like I thought.

Not so fast oh famous one!
I seem to recall looking into that before and I believe I found that the bearing retainers had different bolt spacing on the holes in the front of the case. I guess I'll have to confirm that.

Bolt spacing is the same, just the retainers are different size
