Just an update. After a summer of chasing our tails, we finally made progress. The car didn't respond to jetting or timing. We had a 4.30 gear and I set up a 4.56 AND IT DIDN'T CHANGE A THING! Frustrating is an understatement. No matter what we did, still ran high 11.50s. After taking with Weldon we changed our fuel system from a bypass system to a dead head. Right off the trailer went 11.42. Next upped the pressure because it only had 5 through the lights. Got a little better again. Next run lowered leave rpm to 5k instead of 5800 because it was spinning so bad. Ran 11.33! Last run kept the changes and wired the secondary air valves open. That was a 11.26 at 119.8. That is 2.5 tenths off our best time with the same 60 foot. Now it's fun again. Carbs are still stock jetting. If we can lower the 60 foot and play with the carbs 11.00s should be possible. That is really impressive to me seeing as it still has factory 690 heads with basically no porting except a very simple gasket match and a completely untouched 881 intake. Plus the car weighs 3920 with me in it. I am so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go!!!:beer It's nice when something you try actually works.
Those are GREAT times for a heavy car like that.:beer

Does wiring the secondaries open on the street cause a lean bog? On the track it must be good. I have always thought my secondaries opened slow, but have been too nervous to drill the weights. Maybe I will try it again.

MRHP, I leave at WOT on the limiter so no bog. Just take em completely out and try it. Doesn't cost anything. If it bogs, then just drill them a little at a time till it doesn't improve. If you go too far, you can re weight them with lead shot.

BSL409, last 60 was a 1.58. When we left at 5800 with the improvement it just burned the tires off so we had to lower to 5k. I need to make new brackets for our upper arms because the holes we have now are too far apart and one hole makes too large a change. I also plan to take another turn out of the clutch next time we go out. It is a little tight now with #1100 pounds and 11.5 grams on each lever. Just experiment and video the runs. Video makes a huge difference in figuring it out.

Yeah they would of been identical! This winter the motor is coming out. It has been making metal all year. Something in the short block and I suspect it is the thrust flange because in 80 runs it went from .012 when put together to .021. Ouch! Since we only race it now we are going to bump the compression from 10:1 to 13:1 among along with better rods and 4 bolt mains. Don't know if there will be any money to touch the heads or intake. The short block will cost enough as it is. Can't wait for Thompson. It is a #1 priority for me to make it there. Really had a great time this year meeting lot's of new people. Met Gerry with his black 61 and a couple weeks ago. Also got invited to run with the Nostalgia Super Stock Assoc. Lot's of people remember the car from the 60s which is pretty cool. They always ask "Is this the same Homewrecker that ran here in the 60s?" I still feel weird though when I'm in the staging lanes sitting in the car and people are taking pictures of it. The attention kinda makes me uncomfortable. I'm not sure if I should look at the camera, wave, or just look straight ahead:dunno People really identify with cars like ours. And by ours I mean everybody here.

BSL409 the carbs are 500s with the stock calibration. 86 primary, 95 secondary, and .052 on the power side of the metering rods. We tried richening them 8% with no change but that was with the bypass system. Now it is obvious it wasn't getting enough fuel which explains why the car didn't respond. We plan to play with em next time out.

Here is a link for a quick clip of the car for Route 66 Raceway. It is after a 70 Chevelle. We didn't even know they did it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyuLI-1be1c

I have more in car video if any buddy wants to see it. I know I've posted a couple already so I don't want to bore any one with the same old stuff.

Oh if any buddy has an email address for Gerry Griswald with the black 61 race car please send it to me in a private message. I would like to follow up on something we were talking about but never got his contact info:doh

Ishiftem, you need a cowl air cleaner set up on your car for another tenth or two. I hear they are worth that and a couple of mph.

Went to the Hunnert Car Pileup and had a Great time! Made it to the semi-finals in the super stock class. Also ran our best E.T. to date with a 11.49. Couldn't do any testing though as this is a throw back event and they only give hand written time slips with e.t. and mph. No 60 foot times so there was no point in tuning plus a lot street tire cars tearing the starting line up. It is a heads up event and you run who ever you line up behind in the staging lanes in your class.. I was lucky in who I ran against. Got beat by a Mopar running 10.50. Again the attention the car gets was incredible. You seriously couldn't open the door without getting in some ones way taking a picture. We were the only 409 there and the only stick shift car driven like its supposed to be. Every body just slow shifted theirs, not come out of the whole at 5800 and bang all the gears. The crowd loved it!!!!!!! It was flag starts and and in the semi final neither the Mopar nor I waited for him. As soon as both cars staged we were gone! Hilarious! He is some in car video for your enjoyment. The second video something was on the track and it spun and turned on the 3 to 4 shift. Enjoy!
