Mark Union Pacific has an app you can download on your phone called UP Steam, it has a real time map and schedule showing where their steam engines are at all times. A must for train enthusiasts!

Well you asked for it. Here are some photos from the Reno Air Races, the last photo is of the winner of the unlimited class it’s a Hawker Sea Furry sporting a Pratt R4360 28 cylinder radial engine. Words can not describe the sound. A must for all HP addicts.

Thanks Steve I'll let my Nephew know about the app. We have a couple of steam rides around our area but it sure lacks the scenery that you've traveled through.

Just got back from a run up Cajon Pass to see Union Pacific Big Boy#4014 come down. I went up the 15 freeway to Highway 138 and went west. There was a small crowd of people with video and camera equipment set up, it was about an hour before they got to us, there are still a few things I will go and wait to see, like the world's largest steam locomotive hot and running and working its way down Cajon Pass. Because he was drifting downhill, it wasn't loud, but he was generous with the use of the whistle. You could hear that echoing off the rocks and the canyons ten minutes before he got down to us, it was an incredible sight and sound. My wife and I got tickets for Saturday's excursion, Colton to Yermo in the middle of the desert. We'll be back early Saturday night. It's going to be awesome hearing the world's largest steam locomotive pulling a 2 percent ruling grade with 14 cars. The engine was not only rebuilt, but completely restored inside and out. Looks absolutely brand new. I'll try and describe it later. You Tube will have lots of new video soon.

What a beast, what an awesome sight she commands your attention if you were near by when she was running down the tracks, when this engine was running our nation was the industry leader where you never heard or was printed on any label assembled in America with global products and this is if your lucky to find this in this day & age.

Go on YouTube, enter UP Big Boy #4014 at Highway 138,Cajon Pass Oct. 09,2019. I was sending right near this guy doing the video shoot. That's exactly what I saw and where I saw it from. Tomorrow, it goes the other direction,Sunday it comes back this same way.

Just got back an hour ago from the Colton to Barstow run via Cajon Pass. It looked tremendous, it ran perfectly, lots of good exhaust noise (stack talk),it pulled 20 passenger cars, two helper diesels that were used for dynamic braking only, and two full water tenders. These engines were designed to haul 150 loads over both directions over Sherman Hill between Ogden and Cheyenne. It ran perfectly today as designed. The really great thing in a hundred or so miles of running were the thousands of people watching with cameras, videos, every kind of phone, and recording device out there. You Tube will be full of new 4014 Big Boy videos. For a nice diversion from the day to day ordinary, go find a mainline steam excursion and give it a try. These engines were rated at around 7000 horsepower. Ya-hoo!!

How do they turn that locomotive around for the return trip? A Y? or Roundhouse? turntable?

They went to Yermo out in the middle of the desert where there is a former UP station. I think there's still a Y out there. They discharged all us passengers in Barstow, cleared the train out, then backed it out heading east. We were bussed back to Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station where we parked. It was a long 12 hour day, but it certainly was worth it. I plan on going back to Highway 138 to the same spot I watched from on Wednesday and see it again. I don't know when that engine will be back down here again, but they rebuilt it so thoroughly that they definitely plan to use it. Anything's possible, as the steam team so demonstrated this time. Phil, ya gotta go see it when it runs through Kansas in November. This is like going and seeing an operational Z-11, but there were more Z-11's than Big Boys. Probably still true today.
