Update on Air Bags

Below are my qualifying rounds and elimination rounds from last Saturday’s VAMP Series race at KCIR. This is the first race that I have had the air bags installed. The class that I run in has a 14.40 index, no electronics, and any combination allowed/pro tree. My 63’ Impala is a 355 SBC with stock parts and truck heads/Q-Jet, 8.5 compression/87 oct fuel/P215r70/3.55 posi/TH350/2000 stall and so on. Nothing really special and sorry to say not a 409. I had a great time and learned a bit about the air bags.

Round R/T 60’ ¼ mph Notes
1 .187 2.405 14.721 95.57 95 deg/Very Humid
45psi FT / 30 RT
11Dri bag/ 22 Pass
small burn out

2 deep 2.368 14.573 96.65 95 deg/Very Humid
45psi FT / 25 RT
6.5Dri bag/ 11 Pass
small burn out

3(elim) .472 2.237 14.408 96.50 80 deg/Very Humid
45psi FT / 25 RT
6.5Dri bag/ 11 Pass
small burn out

4(elim) Red

Pass number 3 is the best pass that I have ever made with high humidity and temp (I have run 14.304 w/2.258 60’, but that was 65 deg day in the spring). The engine stall that I had when I shifted 2-3 has been cured with fuel line insulation and my cold air intake seems to be helping the engine make more power. I do not see an 60’ improvement with the installation of the air bags, but now both rear tires are spinning a bit but then biting (I had rubber in both wheels wells when before was just on the passenger side). Now I need to work on my shift points to help my ET and mph to be more consistent. Over all I had a great time and learned quite a bit. Aug 13th the race is at Heartland Park Topeka under the lights!!!! See VAMPRACING.com

Thanks for letting me share,

TomO

14.4 @96mph is really impressive for such a mild setup in a heavy car. And doing it on 87 oct. fuel is cool too. :beerbang
