Nothing to do with playing nice. I agree that that edge could cause you problems and would hate to see a feller have troubles with it. Hot spots are not a good thing. Causes lots of problems.

Don so far the 4 I have checked and they range .025 to .030 below the deck deepening on where you check on the flat spot on the piston.
Of course I have some steel shim gaskets, it's just a matter of finding them 
.
